Lawrenceburg Hospital Courtyard Transformed into Healing Space Through Arts Grant
Patients, visitors, and staff at Southern Tennessee Regional Health System – Lawrenceburg are now able to enjoy a renewed outdoor healing space thanks to a collaborative community arts project supported by funding from the Tennessee Arts Commission, with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The project transformed the hospital courtyard into a welcoming environment designed to promote healing, reflection, and connection. Improvements included extensive cleanup and beautification efforts, the installation of a vibrant mural by a local artist, and privacy enhancements that allow patients to enjoy the courtyard while maintaining the dignity and comfort of those in nearby patient rooms.
A key component of the project was ensuring the space could be safely used by patients and their families. Privacy window tinting was installed to eliminate direct visibility into patient rooms, allowing patients to experience fresh air, outdoor visits with loved ones, and views of the mural without compromising privacy.
The project was made possible through the efforts of local volunteers, who donated their time to prepare and clean the courtyard, and a talented local artist whose work now serves as the centerpiece of the space.
"This project demonstrates the power of the arts to improve quality of life," said Michele Gantz, Executive Director of Downtown Lawrenceburg. "By combining public art, thoughtful design, and community volunteerism, we've created a space that supports healing while celebrating the creativity and generosity of our community."
The courtyard is expected to continue evolving as a place for creativity and wellness. Hospital leadership plans to incorporate future activities such as patient painting projects, a collaborative rock garden, and additional public art, allowing patients, families, and community members to contribute to the space over time.
Downtown Lawrenceburg extends its sincere appreciation to the Tennessee Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts for investing in projects that demonstrate how the arts can strengthen communities and enhance everyday lives. Their support made it possible to create a lasting resource that will benefit Lawrence County residents for years to come.
